Staircase Installation & Finishing

Treads, risers, rails and balusters installed with every line running true from the bottom step to the landing.

Staircases

The staircase is the first thing guests see

In most homes the staircase sits right inside the front door. It's furniture-grade carpentry built on a structural frame, and every flaw shows: a gap under a tread, a baluster out of plumb, a rail that doesn't flow into the newel.

I install and finish stair parts on new and existing staircases, from oak treads and risers to skirt boards, newel posts, handrails and wood or iron balusters.

What makes a staircase look custom

Tight treads

Treads and risers are scribed to the skirt boards, so there are no gaps along the walls.

Plumb balusters

Every baluster is set plumb and evenly spaced, so the rail reads as one clean line.

A rail that flows

Handrails, fittings and newels are aligned so the rail runs smoothly from the bottom step to the landing.

How it works

From walkthrough to final look

01

Walkthrough

We look at the stair, the style you want and the parts on order.

02

Prep

I check the stringers, set the skirt boards and lay out the baluster spacing.

03

Install

Treads, risers, newels, rails and balusters go in level, plumb and tight.

04

Finish

Fill, sand and caulk so it's ready for stain or paint, and I paint the painted parts myself.

Questions

Staircase questions

Can you replace carpeted stairs with hardwood treads?

Often, yes. It depends on what's under the carpet and how the stair was built. I'll look at it and tell you what it takes before I quote.

Do you install iron balusters?

Yes. The oak staircase with iron balusters in my portfolio is my own work.

Do you paint the staircase too?

Yes. I can paint risers, skirt boards, balusters and newel posts, so the stair is finished by the same person who built it.
